The day a shy student finally raised her hand
Some victories are quiet. A teacher remembers the afternoon a silent student found her voice.

For a whole year, Reshma did not speak in class. She knew the answers — I could see it in the way her pencil moved — but her voice stayed locked somewhere she would not let us reach.
I stopped calling on her. Instead I started leaving small notes in the margins of her work: good thinking, ask me about this, you are right. A conversation on paper, until she was ready for one out loud.
Confidence is not loud. Sometimes it is a hand that finally goes up.
Then one ordinary Thursday, I asked why ice floats, and a hand rose at the back of the room. It was Reshma. She answered in four careful words. The class did not even notice. But I did. I will remember that hand long after I have forgotten the syllabus.
A science teacher who turns waste material into wonder, proving curiosity needs no expensive laboratory.
